Okay, people. 29 days until the election. Are you registered to vote?
The good news is, it sounds like a lot of people HAVE registered, so many that many states have had to add extra staff and support to process all the forms. Here in Chapel Hill, I’ve seen voter registration drives happening everywhere: on street corners, on campus, yesterday outside of Best Buy. Here’s the thing, though: the deadline to register for this election is coming up soon. In some states, it’s today. In NC, it’s Friday. So it’s more important than ever that you get out right now and REGISTER. You can go to Rock the Vote to get the deadlines for your state, and to register as well. Do it!
When I was watching Oprah’s show last week about voting, I could NOT believe some of the statistics. Only 56.2 percent of the female voting population actually went to the polls in the last election. Single women were the largest nonvoting group of citizens in the last election: 22 million of them did not vote. On that show, they had a woman who was in her fifties and had never voted. “It just doesn’t have affect me,” she said. I just stared at the TV, dumbstruck. Of COURSE it affects you! Do you breathe the air? Drive on the roads? Have children in schools? Have children, period? Decisions are made by the government that affect us every single day. People say, “Oh, I just don’t have time to vote.” Come on! We’re not asking you for a daily commitment. It’s one day every four years. I don’t care what you say, no one is THAT busy. Please!
I’m not going to get all partisan here: that’s not my point. My point is that your voice, whatever it is saying, COUNTS. People have fought for the vote in this country, died for the vote in this country. We cannot take it for granted. I’d like to say I won’t continue to nag about this, but I can’t promise you that. It’s important to me. It should be important to you, too.
*takes deep breath*
Okay, enough. about politics, how about an update? I have purchased Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it is sitting downstairs as I speak, and this afternoon, once all my errands are done, I am going to pop a big bowl of popcorn, crawl into my bed, and watch it. I cannot wait. You all had SUCH good things to say about it that I can’t imagine not really liking it, if not loving it. I promise an update to this update (is that like a Xerox of a Xerox?) later today or tomorrow. Oh, and in another update, the baby shower went really well. The plastic frozen baby game was a hit, the polaroid messages—-we took a polaroid of each person, and had them write a message to the baby and the parents on it, then put them all in an album for the mom to take home—even more so. Plus, I have a whole bunch of fruit tartlets (“Tartlet. Tartlet….the word’s lost all meaning!) leftover in my fridge, and they are SO good. Things are good. Now if I can just get everyone I know registered to vote AND to the polls, I’ll be happy. Can’t be that hard, right?
Have a good day everyone!
