I will probably regret this. But it seems only right that I answer this high school meme that’s going around. So—gulp–here goes.

What year was it? See, I’m already cringing. This will really show my true age: 1985-1988. (High schools were three years in those ancient days. And please, no jokes if you weren’t even born yet. I can’t take it today.)

What were your favorite bands or musical artists? Hmm…I listened to lot of classic rock: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin. I also really liked The Cars and the Police. So eighties, I know!

What was your favorite outfit? I was a big fan of the jean jacket, I have to say. I had one that was all perfectly broken in, with all these great pockets. It takes a long time, and a lot of washings, to get a jacket just right. I wonder whatever happened to that one…..l

What was up with your hair? It was the eighties. A curling iron was involved. ‘Nuff said.

Who were your best friends? Bianca, Ashley, Hannah, Atiya, and Gretchen. I dedicated Dreamland to them, as well.

Where did you work? In the summers, selling tickets for a local theatre, and, for a couple of surreal months, peddling aluminum siding over the telephone. Never sold a single thing. Then, senior year: Stride Rite Bootery, where I was fired during Hot Diggity Days, although, unlike Haven, I did not throw a shoe at anyone. (Although I kind of wish I had.)

Who did you have a crush on? Oh, man, I’m not even going near that, as entirely too many people from my high school still live in this town. I think I’ll just say my husband and leave it at that.

Did you fight with your parents? Back then, I was pretty conflict adverse (even more so than I am now) so I didn’t really FIGHT with anyone. Maybe the occasional spirited discussion?

Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on? Oooh….hard to remember! I loved the drummer from U2. Very cute, back then. God, I am so OLD! Also Johnny Depp, from his 21 Jump Street Days.

Did you smoke cigarettes? I did. Big mistake. HUGE! Took me forever to quit.

Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack because you were too nervous to find your locker? No. I knew where my locker was. And my classes. Going to them was another issue.

Did you have a ‘clique’? I don’t think so. At least I never thought of it that way. We just 1) liked each other and 2) didn’t like everyone else. Is that a clique? Oops, probably is. Oh, well.

Did you have “The Max” like Zach, Kelly, and Slater? I’m so old Saved by the Bell was after my time. So embarasssing!

Admit it, were you popular? No. I wasn’t particularly memorable, either, I don’t think: at my fifteen year reunion, even my homeroom teacher didn’t know who I was. That’s what you get for making an effort to be invisible, I guess.

Who did you want to be just like? Bianca. (She’s laughing out loud right now, but it’s the truth.)

What did you want to be when you grew up? A writer. I kid you not.

Whew! Enough questions, I was starting to get nervous. The truth hurts, I guess….

have a good day, everyone!
