A bit of domestic drama this weekend, as we discovered that our hot water heater had gone completely haywire. Apparently, when you look through the little safety window, you’re supposed to see a blue flame: that means it’s working correctly. On Saturday, when my husband smelled something funny in the laundry room and checked it, our window displayed a raging orange inferno, hot enough that it was actually melting the glue in the tiles underneath it. Yikes! We turned it off, and now have to get it replaced. But if we hadn’t figured out something was wrong, it might have burned down the entire house. Scary.
So it’s been showers at the neighbors, and no hot water, for a couple of days. I remember when the stresses of my life concerned boyfriends, feuds with co-workers or battling with my parents: now, it’s household appliances. Welcome to your thirties! But the truth is, I’ll take it. Gladly. At least this is easily fixed.
Meanwhile, a new week begins, and it is GORGEOUS out, the kind of day that makes you just want to play hooky and go sit in the sun and watch the leaves fall. This is exactly the kind of day that I always seemed to cut school, back in the day (and I am not condoning this behavior, just so you know: my grades were terrible as a result). But what is it about fall, wanting to grab those last beautiful days before winter sets in, when the sky is just that brightest of blue, and the leaves all sparkly yellows and reds? I always forget how much I love this season. I guess this is another thing about being a grownup—and being self employed—that isn’t bad: the only person I have to answer to if I do slack off today is myself. But then, I’m kind of a taskdriver, and I really SHOULD be writing. We’ll see how it goes.
Speaking of writing, a final note: we’ve put up a new latest news page on my website, although there isn’t much news on it, as of yet. The idea, though, is to try and keep it updated with info about appearances and book stuff and whatever else I can pass along. With the new book, it looks like there might be some fun contests and promotions, so when I know more, you’ll be able to find it there. In the meantime, I’m having fun tinkering around with the blogger stuff, which is neat. I think I secretly wish I could learn HTML and totally geek out, but a part of me is afraid I’d never understand it. Maybe I should add it to my list of stuff I want to learn to do, along with pilates, Chinese cooking, shopping on a budget and….learning not to make so many lists for the future. It’s that last one that’s the kicker, I think.
Oh, whatever. I’m going outside to do absolutely nothing. At least for a little while….
