You know it’s going to be a weird day when you turn on the news right after eight o’clock am, expecting the big lead-off story on GMA to be something insightful, important, and world-relevant, and instead, there’s this. A woman misses her husband, who is away on military duty, so she creates a mannequin in his likeness. Okay, so maybe it’s curious and interesting. But the lead story after eight? With Diane Sawyer (who I just felt so embarrassed for) interviewing her, as if this was Real News?
Maybe I’m just crabby. If so, let me continue in this rant phase and say I have never had so much spam in my email inbox as I do these days. It’s insane. Perhaps I’ve just been fortunate up until now, with only about two out of every ten being junk. No more. These days, I’m lucky if any of the twenty or so messages in my email at any given moment are actually from anyone I know, pertaining to anything other than cheap Rolexes, body part enhancement (ahem) or getting free satellite TV channels. I guess the spam filter is just a formality. Or maybe without it, it would be even worse?
Okay, enough complaining. Here’s something to be happy about: the Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, which means the Oscar season is coming soon. I can’t seem to find any story that has the complete list, but it looks like Brokeback Mountain got quite a few nods, which isn’t surprising, since I’ve heard nothing but raves about it. No telling when it’ll get down here, though: I guess we just have to be patient. Since I’ve only just gotten back into going to the movies, I’ll probably have to work to catch up on everything that gets mentioned for Oscars, but there are worst things to be worrying about. Like…twenty spam emails with misspelled subject lines, shilling diet pills. Or the sorry state of morning news.
But then again: today, season five of Gilmore Girls, out on DVD. YESSSSSSS! And just like that, all is right with the world.
