Tonight is the Golden Globes, my very favorite award show—and how sad is that, that I have a favorite? Seriously, though, the Globes are much more fun than the Oscars, where the hype never lives up (although I think picking Jon Stewart to host will certainly make things more interesting) or the Grammys, where you often have to sit through a bunch of boring performances. The Globes don’t even have a host, so things at least feel like they’re moving quickly, and the setup with everyone at tables instead of in rows makes it feel more like one big dinner party. I still haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain (this week, I hope) which is favored to win a lot, but I’ve at least caught a few of the nominated films. I am really rooting for Reese Witherspoon to win, and The Squid and the Whale to win something, if it’s even nominated. Clearly, I have a lot of catching up to do before the Oscars.
I did watch three movies this weekend, although only one of them was in any way recent: The March of the Penguins, which I watched with my mom on Saturday morning. We were duly impressed, although we’re both such big wimps neither one of us could handle the sad parts. Yes, I know nature is harsh, and some have to die because that’s natural selection, but actually SEEING it is another thing entirely. Then, yesterday, I took one of my favorite chick flicks, 13 Going On 30, over to my friend Leigh’s house, because 1) she’d never seen it and 2) she’s really pregnant, and I was worried if we went to the theatre the baby might think the movie onscreen was too good to miss and decide it was time to come out and join us. Anyway, I love that movie. And the now ironic blatant J. Lo placement on the cover of the magazine where Jennifer Garner’s character works makes it just that much more fun. Then last night, I watched Cousins, which is one of my favorite all time movies. Yes, it has Ted Danson in it. And yes, it’s a little dated with the 80’s fashions. And yes, it drove my husband out of the room and almost out of the house. But it’s just so SWEET. And a good way to end the weekend, to boot.
So tonight, the Golden Globes, tomorrow more movies (hopefully). In the meantime, something else, very rudimentary, so be kind. And Just Listen.
