So I really think I need to stop reading so much about movies online. And maybe, I should start skipping the movie reviews in EW, as well. Because when the reviews are REALLY good, and everyone’s raving, I have such high expectations that nothing stands a true chance of actually being great. Take, for instance, Little Miss Sunshine, which I went to see last night.
Now, if I knew nothing about this movie and just happened to drop in and see it, I would have thought it was totally cute. Funny and quirky and good. And it WAS all these things. But to me, it was not The Best Movie So Far This Year, or The Best Comedy in Ages, both of which I’d heard it called in multiple reviews and ads in the last few weeks. It was good. But not oh-my-God-lifechanging-great. And who says it has to be? But when something is so talked up, it’s bound to disappoint you. Hence, my self-imposed movie review blackout. On the flip side, though, I might end up seeing some REALLY bad movies if I don’t have EW to guide me. But I guess that’s the price I’ll have to pay.
Other things, however, DO live up to your expectations. Take, for instance, Jennifer Weiner’s new book of stories, The Guy Not Taken, which I was lucky enough to score an early copy of and am now totally devouring. (It comes out on September 5th.) I’ve said here before that I am a HUGE Jennifer Weiner fan, so maybe I’m a bit biased. But I just love this book. It’s short stories, which is a bit of a departure, but the only downside I can see is that when each one ends I just wish it would keep going. Which is not really a downside, actually. The characters are great, the voices strong, and I’m honestly having to pace myself so I don’t just whip through it in a day and the have to wait another year or two for something else from her. Which is HARD. But I am trying. If you want a preview, check out her MySpace page, where you can see her read an excerpt. So cool.
So there you have it. A little bit of good-but-not great, some outright great, and….well, it’s all good, I guess. You could do worse on a Tuesday, right?
