Okay, first things first. Tonight, at 9pm, following Gilmore Girls, is the premiere of Veronica Mars. And you MUST watch it. Why? Because it’s a great show. Because it’s not only a great show, but one that’s managed to get a devoted following even while being hopelessly overlooked by the general viewing public. Because, now, tonight, it finally gets a chance to follow a show that people ARE watching. Because it hasn’t been picked up for a full season, which means that this is really, literally, its last big chance to grab and audience or possibly be demoted to DVD and our fond memories forever. If this was a movie about an underdog, this would be the moment that our heroine, having faced a series of small yet empowering challenges, now finds herself at The Big Game or The Big Dance or whatever Big Moment. The music swells, the pace quickens. The crowd is chanting, the dance floor is clearing. Pick your scenario, the idea is the same: it’s now or never. So help me, and all the other people out there like me who LOVE LOVE LOVE this show, and tune in. You won’t be sorry. I promise.

Speaking of great things, I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. First up, at the beach, I read Lee Smith’s On Agate Hill, which was fantastic, and how great is it to start your vacation with a book you can’t put down? I had tears in my eyes at the end, which hardly ever happens to me when I read. So good. (And if you’re interested in Lee, or writing in general, you should check out this article, which recently ran in our local paper and also brought tears to my eyes.
Then, I moved on to The Tender Bar by JR Moehringer, which was one of the best memoirs I’ve read in a long time. Now, I’m halfway through The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri, which is just as good as everyone said it was. I’ve been told that once I am done I must run, not walk, to get The Interpreter of Maladies, and I usually do as I’m told, so I think that will be next.
Finally, I just want to thank whoever got the quote game started over at Sarahland. I’ve had fun playing along, and so far, I have gotten every single one. How sad would it be, really, though, if I didn’t? Pretty sad. Just watch. Now that I’ve said that, I’ll get stumped.
And now, just to beat my initial point home that much more—and I’ll leave it alone after this—I give you the VM blooper reel. People! What else do you want?
