I have to say, I was really sad to hear of Tammy Faye Messner passing this weekend. I knew she’d been very sick, as we were watching One Punk Under God earlier this year, which is a show that followed her son Jay, who was helping to care for her. Still, I was kind of shocked to see her on Larry King late last week, looking so ravished and thin. So sad.

I guess I had a special affinity for Tammy, being from North Carolina, where PTL and Jim Bakker and all that began. I can remember flipping channels on the weekend mornings as a kid and passing their show, with her always either crying or singing, or doing both at the same time. Once PTL imploded and Jim Bakker went off to jail, I lost track of Tammy until she re-emerged in that documentary The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which was fabulous, and later on the Surreal Life, which was, well, surreal. Regardless of your religious beliefs or convictions, Tammy Faye was hard to hate: she had that sort of crazy buoyancy that always made her seem somehow in on every joke she was the butt of, so you found yourself rooting for her, even when she seemed so over the top. If you don’t believe me, check out The Eyes of Tammy Faye. You might just become a believer.

In other news, we’re experiencing a weird July cooldown: it was sixty degrees here this morning, and not humid AT ALL. I’d be ecstatic if I wasn’t so suspicous. July in NC without humidity? It just feels wrong. And also, oh so right. So I’m going to try not to be paranoid, and instead go outside and enjoy it while it lasts…

have a good day, everyone!
