I’m writing this on Easter Sunday afternoon, during a rare quiet moment of this very busy weekend. (And by quiet, I mean that my daughter is not here running wild, although the dogs are barking nonstop. It’s all relative.) I know I used to do all my blogging on weekday mornings. But I’ve realized that the mornings are so busy now that my entries have gotten kind of rushed and sucky–not to put too fine a point on it—so I figured I’d try something new. We’ll see how it goes.

We’ve spent the last couple of days doing the family thing, taking lots of walks, planting in the garden and basically just getting ready for Spring, officially. I know it’s been Spring technically for awhile, but this weekend, it finally feels like it’s really here to stay. (I hope, anyway.)

One thing I always like to do at the beginning of a season is go through all my condiments in the fridge and toss out stuff that we haven’t used since, um, the previous season. You know, that jar of fish sauce I bought for that Asian dish I made once and never again, or the salad dressing I bought on a whim, to shake things up, and hated after tasting it once. (Yeah, that’s how I shake things up. What’s your point?) Anyway, whenever we are doing this big clean, the same argument arises. And because the last time, during the Great Dishtowel Debate, you guys were so helpful, I am coming to you again to weigh in and settle this issue.

Okay, so here it is: (and don’t laugh, please): How long do YOU think salsa stays good for? I’m talking the jar stuff, like Pace or Newman’s. Some of us in this house (I won’t say who so you can be impartial) think it is like ketchup, and can last awhile. Others argue that once opened, it’s a week or so, and it’s done. This is actually a variation on several other arguments concerning When Things Go Bad. But condiments have their own category, it comes up so often. (Remember what I said about shaking things up? This is what counts as conflict around here. Which I guess is a good thing, now that I think about it.) Anyway, if you have an opinion (and maybe you don’t, and I’m just crazy) please feel free to weigh in.

While we wait to hear what you have to say, I think I’ll go make some deviled eggs. That is, once I’ve cleared out all my old mayo, mustard and sweet cubes so I can bust out new ones. I always make a lot of deviled eggs when I am stressed out or have a lot going on, so I see a lot of them in my near future, with the book coming out and everything else. Might need to buy some new paprika too, now that I think about it.

I hope you all had a great holiday weekend with the people you love. Whether you agree about food spoilage or not.

Have a great night, everyone!
