It’s been a little while, I know. I had to take a little road trip to South Carolina. And no trip to South Carolina is complete without a stop at:
That’s right. South of the Border. You start seeing the billboards about, oh, ninety-one miles before you actually get there. It’s silly. Totally trashy. And, at nine-thirty on a Thursday morning, completely surreal. Yet I couldn’t help myself.
I was going to SC to for a librarians conference. I know what you’re thinking: librarians. Glasses, mousy haircuts. Shhhhhhing you all the time. But they’re not all like that. In fact, some of them—like these below, maybe?—are downright wild.
(Think speeding through hotel parking lots in a minivan, doing donuts. I’m joking. But it COULD have happened.)
The next day, I got to give a speech and then go to a luncheon to accept the South Carolina Young Adult Book Award for my book Someone Like You. This was just so cool because I never win ANYTHING. Ever.
I was given the award by the very stylish Jessica, who had the coolest cell phone I’d ever seen. (Multiple colors! Flashing!)
Then I gave a speech—scribbled hours earlier on a hotel notepad—and sat down. I got some good applause, but I was the last speaker on a Friday afternoon, so they may have just been relieved to get out of there.
I can’t believe I finally won something. I guess this means the lottery’s out, because I’m just not that lucky.
All in all, it was a great trip. Now I’m home, exhausted, and staring down thirty-eight emails. Thirty-eight! God! Maybe I need to hit the road again to escape this madness.
It is tempting……….
