Turkey Day: three days and counting.

I love Thanksgiving. I don’t know why, but I do. This year I’m loving it especially, because we

Oh my God! I just saw an owl in my yard. In broad daylight. Just standing by a tree. That’s GOT to be a good sign.

(This would be the point my husband would sigh, rolling his eyes heavenward, and say, “Not everything is a sign, you know.” But an owl is. It just IS. So there.)

Anyway. Back to what I was talking about. What was I talking about? Oh, yeah. Thanksgiving.

Maybe I love it so much because it’s not about commerce, and Buying, and feelling stress about your enormous Christmas list and how you haven’t even bought anything yet even though you swore last year you wouldn’t wait until the last minute, again. Or maybe because it’s about giving Thanks, and gratitude. Or maybe because it’s really the very tail end of the semester, and we all love that.

Maybe, though, it’s about the food.

The food! Turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy is, like, in my top three favorite meals of all time. (Chinese food—all kinds—and shrimp with pasta being the other two.) Plus there’s pie. Apple pie, to be exact, which I am making. I am also going to attempt to make sausage balls, which my husband loves because his grandmother makes the best in the Whole World (and which makes my attempt to make them a bit more fraught, but whatever, that’s fine).

Even while I’m stuffing my face, I’m going to attempt to remember how thankful I am for everything I have. I think too often lately I’ve been so busy pushing myself forward and being all stressed out about What’s Up Next that I haven’t taken the time to slow down and just appreciate things. Like my friends. And my family. And my dogs. And my husband (god bless him, he puts up with so much). And little moments like the one I just had, when an owl spreads its wings and flies in front of my window, just soaring. Wow.

Have a good day, everyone….
