How is it possible that I make a conscious effort to avoid the radio and news for a little while, and in less than twenty-four hours both Johnny Cash AND John Ritter die? What is going on with the world?

I had a feeling Johnny would go, to be honest. Once June Carter died you just knew they had that kind of marriage, he was so dependent on her, his grief so overwhelming, that he wouldn’t make it long without her. But John Ritter? Jack Tripper? Dying on the set of 8 Simple Rules? That’s so sad and completely unexpected. Say what you will, they’re both icons, although of course Johnny Cash left the more distinguished legacy, I guess you’d say. His last album—which had the cover of “Hurt” on it—-was amazing. He also covered “In my Life,” and the last song was “We’ll Meet Again”–

We’ll meet again
Don’t know where, don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again, some sunny day…..

*sigh*

I want to listen to it today, to honor him, but maybe I’ll just wait. It’s grey and heavy feeling outside and I’m just not sure I can take it.

Remember Johnny Cash today. Maybe wear some black (I was always the Johnny Cash of waitresses at the Burrito, since I often wore all black, better to hide stains). Listen to “Ring of Fire,” or watch MTV, where I’m sure they’ll finally be showing the “Hurt” video as much as they should have been doing all along. And remember John Ritter. Watch that awesome early Buffy episode that was the beginning of his comeback. Or participate in some wacky situation derived from some silly misunderstanding, a la Three’s Company. It’s the least we can do, right?

have a good day everyone.
