Yesterday, I went to see Scary Movie 3. (Yes, I could not resist.) Three o’clock show, Lumina Theatre, also known as: my private screening room. I was the only person there. Which is always sort of weird, but especially so for a movie like that, which is laugh-out-loud funny (and cringe-oh-my-God gross), you just feel the need for someone to be there with you. But I just ate my popcorn and settled in. Citizen Kane, it ain’t. But it wasn’t a bad way to spend an hour and a half.
Some people think it’s weird that I like to go to the movies by myself. I know people (women in particular) who would just Never Do That, just as they would Never Go Out to Eat Alone, Ever. The eating out thing has not been an issue for me for ages. I think it comes from working in restaurants, where I waited on so many people eating alone. Not a big deal. And while I love to go to the movies with friends, there’s something very calming about skipping out by myself on a random afternoon and settling into the third row center (my preferred spot) to lose myself in something other than my daily drama for a little while. After a hectic week, it’s often the only thing that can really calm me down.
This weekend, all sorts of good movies are coming out. Well, there’s Matrix Revolutions (which I won’t see, because I am too stupid to understand those movies, don’t ask me how I know this, but it IS documented). And then there’s Elf, with Will Farrell, who I LOVE, who you just WANT to see do well, because anyone who could play that cheerleader character on SNL deserves success. And finally, Love Actually, which I have been waiting for ages. Hugh Grant? Check. Colin Firth? Check. Keira Knightley? Check Check. And the writer of Bridget Jones, Four Weddings AND Notting Hill? I’m there. Maybe alone, maybe not. Although, as I said earlier, it’s one thing to GO to a movie alone, another to SEE it alone, as in, no one else in the theatre. If it’s a good movie, though, you don’t even notice after awhile. And at least you can laugh, or cry, or spill your drink, and no one’s the wiser. Gotta love that.
have a good day everyone!
