So I finally went to see Cold Mountain yesterday. And my reaction was:
I didn’t think it was all that great. In fact, I thought the first hour or so was so hokey that I almost considered leaving, which is crazy, because I never do that. I read the book when it first came out, and it is an incredible story. But I felt like they felt like they had to Hollywood-ize it, especially the love story aspect. It was too cutesy between Inman and Ada, in my opinion. But what really bothered me was Nicole Kidman. I didn’t feel like for one second she was anyone BUT Nicole Kidman. Plus, it’s the middle of the Civil War, she’s supposed to be living in total poverty, but she looks like she’s still somehow managing to get regular facials AND have her pants tailored. And her hands look completely manicured. It was totally distracting.
The worst though: Nicole’s accent. “Ah remembah the first time I cahme to Cold Mountain…” Ugh. Please. All Southerners do not talk like Scarlett O’Hara, I promise you. Do some research!
But there were some good moments, good performances. Jude Law is fantastic, as always and Renee Zellweger deserved that Golden Globe. And the fact that I’m still thinking about it today has to mean something. Plus I’m the first to admit that it’s really hard to capture the essence of a great novel onscreen. I just think that maybe this book would have been better served as some small, arty film, instead of a movie so clearly created to win Oscars and have Big Stars. Just my opinion, of course.
Meanwhile, today is the Superbowl. I intend to comsume vast quantities of Seven Layer Dip and chicken wings. Yum! Speaking of which, I need to go to the grocery store….
have a good day everyone!
