A quick entry, as this will be a busy day. But I just want to say, on the day that I read here on campus, how much I really love my job.
One reason: yesterday, I got to meet Alice Walker.
Yes, THAT Alice Walker. Of the Color Purple, Temple of my Familiar, etc. She was here on campus to give a talk and met with Creative Writing students yesterday afternoon with her agent, and it was just fabulous. She is….a presence. That’s the only word I can use. When she speaks to you—as she did to me, when I asked a question about writing and being discouraged—you’re completely and totally mesmerized. Wow. All I can say is that everyone in your life can be telling you something—i.e. that you need to relax about writing, and try to let it come naturally—but when Alice Walker says it, you LISTEN. And I did.
This fall, Pat Conroy. Yesterday, Alice Walker. Again: I love my job.
Now I’m off to get ready for this afternoon. I’ll let you all know how it goes.
have a good afternoon everyone!
