A few minutes ago, I saw the freakiest commercial: computer-generated elephants in Rastafarian wear, rapping about peanut butter to other elephants, dressed in what looked like Spring Break attire. I think it was for Skippy Peanut Butter. Whatever it was, it was horrifying. Who can handle that at 7:50 in the morning?
In other news, I finished Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities yesterday. I did think it was compelling reading, but I was more interested in the personal stories of the girls than all the research and facts about Greek life. (What can I say, I’m a novelist, people’s stories are ALWAYS more interesting to me than facts). On the whole, though, I found it to be really interesting, although I think it’s hard to come into any organization and not have some sort of opinion from the outset that would color what you see and experience. In fact, I’m really interested in how Alexandra Robbins was able to infiltrate the sororities so fully. Couldn’t have been easy. Maybe she’ll write something about that, next? On the whole though, I recommend it. Anyway, next I’m onto Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, as my reading summer continues….
Speaking of reading—ah, such a neat transition!—I’m at the Barnes and Noble at New Hope Commons in Durham tonight, for those of you in this area. 7pm, reading and signing, you know the drill. Should be fun. And air conditioned. Thank God! It’s been hot, hot hot here, with no letup in sight. July in N.C.: truly an endurance course. And just wait until August. These are the dog days, indeed. I can’t wait to go on vacation. Soon, soon!
have a good day everyone!
